Children are taught phonics and spelling daily in Early Years and Key Stage One, following the National Curriculum 2014 framework. Guided Reading takes place daily throughout the school and all children receive a quality guided reading session with a teacher on a weekly basis.
We use a range of colour book banded reading schemes for Guided Reading including;
- Rigby Star
- Bug Club
- Phonics Bug
- Comics for Phonics
- Oxford Reading Tree
- Rigby Navigator and Navigator Max
Children from Reception up to year 6 also receive a home reading book to consolidate their reading level. Once children reach a Level 3B, they become a free reader and widen their reading repertoire by choosing their own texts to read independently and we visit Felling library on a fortnightly basis. All children at Falla Park are expected to read on a daily basis at home. In addition to this, Reception and Year 1 take home word tins to develop their sight vocabulary.
At Falla Park, we place a high importance on Reading a range of stories by a range of authors. We have a list of ‘Must Reads’ for every year group, which are the core texts we think all children should experience, read and enjoy at different ages. These are available and displayed in reading areas in classrooms so children can access these at any time.
