At Falla Park we ensure our children have a high quality mathematics education giving them a foundation for:
- Understanding the world
- The ability to reason mathematically
- A sense of excitement and curiosity about the subject.
We want children to become fluent in mathematical facts and be able to solve problems and reason mathematically. We especially want children to see the relevance and importance of learning maths and to practise applying their skills in real life and practical contexts.
Being fluent in mathematical facts means that we want children to have quick and accurate mental recall of facts they have learned including knowing number bonds and times tables. We will support children to learn these through mental maths sessions, daily maths lessons and computer programs such as Mathletics which they are also able to access at home.
Being able to solve problems involves teaching children precision and confidence in using mathematical concepts, properties and symbols, and being competent and flexible in choosing and using appropriate methods in different contexts. When problem solving we want children to be able to break down problems into simpler parts or steps; make decisions about gathering, processing and calculating; and to show perseverance in finding solutions.
In line with the new National Curriculum children will be taught the following aspects of maths:
- Number (including: numbers and place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division)
- Fractions (including decimals and percentages)
- Geometry (including properties of shapes and position and direction)
- Ratio and proportion
Children will be encouraged to make connections across mathematical procedures and concepts to ensure fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving problems. They will also practise and apply their mathematical knowledge in science and other subjects across the curriculum.
